Brace yourselves.

In the week’s ahead, as we move into Lent, enemies of the Pope will no doubt remember that he changed the Good Friday prayer for Jews in the 1962MR. Then the whole anti-Jewish thing will have another round in the news cycle.

But there is another yearly controversy we should get ready for.

Si vis pacem, para bellum.

The Church clearly … crystal clearly… states that in the optional Mandatum ceremony of the washing of feet on Holy Thursday, only men should be chosen. Let’s state that again: only men must have their feet washed in this optional ceremony on Holy Thursday.

Yet many priests and bishops – who like to have their own rules followed – simply blow that off and do what they want in this regard, to the consternation of many.

A reader sent me a copy of this interesting letter addressed to him from the under-secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, Fr. Anthony Ward.

The salient part:

According to the Missale Romanum (teria editio typica 2002), Feria V in Cena Domini, Ad Missam vespertinam, no. 11, the washing of feet is reserved to "chosen men" (viri selecti), that is male persons. This is also stated in the Caeremoniale Episcoporum (editio typica 1984, reimpressio 1995), no. 301. This Dicastery considers this legislation clear and wishes to add nothing further.

Should your problems persist, the Congregation would remind you that you write again to the Diocesan Bishop who is the moderator, promoter and guardian of the liturgical life of the diocese (cf. canon 835 §1). He would be the appropriate person to contact.

At this point, you will be saying "But Father! But Father!", with hands trembling in frustration. "What if the local bishop is the one who is violating this clear legislation? Would that Dicastery have anything further to say then?"

I don’t know. But the Congregation does have an address and a fax machine, were you to have printed evidence that there are plans to wash the feet of female persons… you know, non-males… the opposite of viri selecti.

"But Father! But…"

Yes… I know what you are about to ask.

Remember that the CDW’s document Redemptionis Sacramentum par. 184 reaffirms the right of every Catholic to have recourse directly to the Holy See. People may write directly to Rome to express concerns. Sure, it is best to work your way up the ladder, as it were, with respect and with charity… and concrete evidence.

But people can write to the Congregation at any time during the process. And that, in fact, seems to be necessary when there is little or no hope of local recourse.

Should people make a fuss over this?

That is up to you. I think that the Sacred Triduum is important. The rite of the Mandatum is important. Our right to have our rites celebrated correctly by our shepherds is important.

Make up your own mind.

Redemptionis Sacramentum includes this toward the end of the document (my emphases):

6. Complaints Regarding Abuses in Liturgical Matters

[183.] In an altogether particular manner, let everyone do all that is in their power to ensure that the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist will be protected from any and every irreverence or distortion and that all abuses be thoroughly corrected. This is a most serious duty incumbent upon each and every one, and all are bound to carry it out without any favouritism.

[184.] Any Catholic, whether Priest or Deacon or lay member of Christ’s faithful, has the right to lodge a complaint regarding a liturgical abuse to the diocesan Bishop or the competent Ordinary equivalent to him in law, or to the Apostolic See on account of the primacy of the Roman Pontiff. It is fitting, however, insofar as possible, that the report or complaint be submitted first to the diocesan Bishop. This is naturally to be done in truth and charity.

CONCLUSION

[185.] “Against the seeds of discord which daily experience shows to be so deeply ingrained in human nature as a result of sin, there stands the creative power of the unity of Christ’s body. For it is precisely by building up the Church that the Eucharist establishes fellowship among men.” It is therefore the hope of this Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments that also, by the diligent application of those things that are recalled in this Instruction, human weakness may come to pose less of an obstacle to the action of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, and that with all distortion set aside and every reprobated practice removed, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “Woman of the Eucharist”, the saving presence of Christ in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood may shine brightly upon all people.

[186.] Let all Christ’s faithful participate in the Most Holy Eucharist as fully, consciously and actively as they can, honouring it lovingly by their devotion and the manner of their life. Let Bishops, Priests and Deacons, in the exercise of the sacred ministry, examine their consciences as regards the authenticity and fidelity of the actions they have performed in the name of Christ and the Church in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. Let each one of the sacred ministers ask himself, even with severity, whether he has respected the rights of the lay members of Christ’s faithful, who confidently entrust themselves and their children to him, relying on him to fulfill for the faithful those sacred functions that the Church intends to carry out in celebrating the sacred Liturgy at Christ’s command. For each one should always remember that he is a servant of the Sacred Liturgy.

There are times when a comment to a post speaks for many. Here follows Vatican 2 Catholic’s comment to my post of His Holiness bearing the title: Viva Il papa! Viva!

This article is going to be very blunt right off the bat. In regards to the recent numerous attacks on Pope Benedict and the lifting of the excommunications of the SSPX the critical priests, bishops, cardinals who are pledged in obedience to the pope quite frankly need to shut up.

What a bunch of self righteous tradition hating intolerant bigots. Talk about showing one’s true colors. Way to be true to the Gospels and imitators of Christ by reaching out and welcoming back a million plus Catholic souls who have been isolated from the Church for over twenty years. Great pastoral work there boys! To be frank you critics of the Pope are as just as light headed as the rest of these media junkies who couldn’t get a Catholic thing right if the Pope himself educated them. If you think one
stupid bishop’s comments in an interview done last fall changes the stance of the Church’s teaching and the efforts that Pope Benedict has made through his entire life to work against anti-Semitism then your just as blind as the rest of them.

We’re really getting sick and tired of half ass Catholics who are more so in name than in deed attacking the Church and the person God Himself has appointed as the Vicar of Christ (in case you forgot your theology in your bureaucratic politics).

Hardly one of you has done a blasted thing to condemn the sex scandals and hold your fellow bishops or priests accountable.

Hardly any of you has followed the documents of the Council in regards to the liturgy and ecumenism. As far as many of us obedient and orthodox ‘novus ordo’ Catholics are concerned you’re just as disobedient and on the verge of schism as the SSPX.

We have traveled to at least 15 western countries world wide since the release of Redemptionis Sacramentum and have hardly seen any implementation of the document who your so called ‘beloved John Paul the Great’ mandated to be implemented immediately.

Half of you have been a bunch of cowards in following the teachings of the Church in regards to abortion, politicians and the reception of the Body of Christ in the Eucharist.

We haven’t seen any unified public condemnation for the widespread dissent in your seminaries and convents. But in some of your seminaries the frequent occuring of online use of pornographic materials and child porn in some cases doesn’t seem to be a concern to you.

The disregard for adherence to the teachings of Humanae Vitae and holding your priests accountable are completely out of line with your ‘vocation descriptions’.

Your lack of excommunications or corrections for Catholics and Catholic Universities who out rightly defy or deny almost every sexual teaching that the Church holds including the open declaration of many of your priests to support same sex unions and participation in gay events is frankly disgusting.

Many of you continue to do nothing in correcting and dealing with the many priests, nuns, and laity who openly defy and disobey the teachings of celibacy and woman’s ordinations.

The European bishops have done a great job at keeping up the Churches as museums but in Church attendance they have failed miserably which shows a lack of doing what a bishop is suppose to do, teach the faith.

The lack of excommunications for ‘Catholics who have endorsed or enabled the availability of same sex unions.

The Canadian Bishops have yet to rebuke the 200 plus religious orders who in 2007 generated a report full of dissent in teaching, discipline, sexuality, celibacy, homosexuality, divorce, and female ordination.

The Canadian Conference of Bishops still refuse to allow the Vatican to investigate whether the Winnipeg Statement contains schismatic claims.

And you bishops world wide continue to question the authority of the pope and the huge dilemma he has to fix because of your failings. Look to yourselves before you criticize and condemn others.

Wake up priests and bishops and do your jobs. The pope is doing an excellent job of getting the Catholic Church back on its feet and unifying all Christians back into the fold. And you stand there like a bunch of hypocrites criticizing your leader. Maybe if you started following His example in teaching, example especially in regards to Ecumenism and Liturgy you would see a change in the world in which you have allowed to become so corrupt with sin. And if you had been as obedient and tolerable as you
claim to be then you would have never allowed this situation to get to where its at. Stop pointing fingers at the Pope and start pointing them to God in prayer. Your lack of charity with both the Pope and the millions of Catholics who adhere to the authentic teachings of the Catholic Church is no
longer tolerable. Either wake up and deal with the crisis of faith that you have allowed to occur for the past 40 years or as John Paul told the liberal regimists in South America “Silencio” .

Just look at the simple comments from the Pope on the Media recently released asking us to use the media to proclaim the Gospel and instead you use it to create friction, division and attack your leader. This goes just as well for the Bishop Williams fellow as well. Great example from our leaders and teachers of the faith!

To be a member of the Catholic Church means you adhere to the teachings and the Magisterium, Not attack it! If you’re not with the Church then you are against the Church. It’s that simple. Not our words Jesus’. These internal attacks on the orthodoxy of the faith and the papacy need to end now! This
nonsense has been going on for 40 plus years and quite frankly its sinful. The Catholic Church is not an organization running a Public Relations campaign. The Catholic Faith is not an opinion it is a way of life. The faith is not a Catholic buffet either you accept it in fullness or get out. Why do you distract those who have chosen the Church as their way of life with your spiritual garbage. Why are you in the Church if you are not here to build it up. Why are you still here if you hate orthodoxy and the Church’s teachings.

The Catholic Church is the One True Church of Jesus Christ in which is concerned only with the salvation of all mankind. If that is not your mission within the Church to cooperate with God’s mission and save souls including the million plus members of the SSPX then as Vatican II says ‘You are neither of use to yourself or to the Church’. If you attack the Papacy you are attacking the Church. If you are attacking the Church you are attacking Jesus Himself. It’s really time for the Church’s members to stop attacking the Church and start building it up. Your are the body of Christ. You are the salt of the earth. You are commanded to save souls. You are told to preach the gospel. “I give you a new commandment love one another as I have loved you”

A bestselling author has called octuplets-mother Nadya Sulamen a 'murderer' and warns of overpopulation saying, "we need to lose 4.4 billion people."

“STOP HAVING CHILDREN.” Steven Kotler has declared that responsible adults should stop having children in order to save the planet. Those who are having kids, are being selfish and stealing from the future, the rest of humanity, and “every living thing on the earth,” he wrote. Have too many kids and you should go to jail.

This isn’t a joke. Kotler writes a blog called “The Playing Field” on the Psychology Today Web site. He is a best selling author and an advocate of controlling population growth. His latest solution: a five-year moratorium on having kids.

Kotler’s reasoning is that the planet is running out of resources. “You think the economy is bad now – wait a few years,” Kotler said. “Wait until we’re almost completely out of oil and food and water and available land ... we need to lose 4.4 billion people and we need to lose them fast.”

Those comments came just days after Nadya Sulamen, a single mother of six, gave birth to octuplets, and Kotler had an opinion about her as well. “She’s a criminal,” Kotler declared. “She’s a murderer. She’s not only guaranteeing her kids a very hard life, she’s killing all of us.”

Kotler isn’t the the first person to say humans are destroying the planet. Paul Watson of the radical Sea Shepherd Society, has called for the global population to fall below one billion, because “we are killing our host, the planet Earth,” Watson opined. “I was once severely criticized for describing human beings as being the ‘AIDS of the Earth.’ I make no apologies for that statement,” Watson has said.

Like Watson, Kotler doesn’t think much of humans. In December, writing on “The Playing Field,” he said:

So do I think that a dog's life is worth more than a humans? I think that no dog has ever, intentionally, for reasons of selfish greed, destroyed their home like we have ours. I think that yes, there are way too many people on the planet, and while I'm not advocating mass euthanasia (though mandatory birth control sounds pretty good to me), I think before we start saying humans are worth more than dogs, we need to examine exactly what we have contributed to the quality of life for all species on this planet, not just our own.

Such ideas are hardly original. Thomas Malthus, an influential 18th century economist and philosopher, was an early proponent of population control. He reduced the human position on earth to a mathematical observation: “Population, when unchecked, increases in a geometrical ratio,” Malthus wrote in 1798. “Subsistence increases only in an arithmetical ratio. A slight acquaintance with numbers will show the immensity of the first power in comparison of the second.”

Nearly two centuries later, America scientist Paul Ehrlich took up the Malthusian standard, and added his own shrill urgency. In his hugely successful 1968 book, The Population Bomb, Ehrlich foresaw that, "In the 1970s and 1980s…hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now."

Ehrlich’s answer was “compulsory birth regulation…(through) the addition of temporary sterilants to water supplies or staple food. Doses of the antidote would be carefully rationed by the government to produce the desired family size."

Of course, Malthus, Ehrlich and other doomsayers have been proven spectacularly wrong. Kolter didn’t address that fact in his piece.

Pro Abortion (in name only) Catholics are the ones politicizing the Eucharist by receiving it in the state of SIN and confusing the weak minded by their blasphemous statements, and the Bishops and Priests are complicit in the matter by serving them. The Bishops or Priests, if they refuse to give them Communion are doing their duty. Think about the word Communion, are these Politicians in COMMUNION with the Catholic Church and its precepts and teachings,,,,NOT!!! To be blunt, USCCB, grow a set, stand up like men and stop worrying about offending a Non Catholic-catholic Politician, We Catholics admire resolve and spirit, we detest weasel words and hair splitting.

Do YOU see a Pattern Here?

To get a grasp how bad the situation really is read the synopsis below by Father John McCartney of Saint Matthew's on Long Island, He sums up the sad state of Catholic politicians pretty well:

Two days after the inauguration of President Obama, I traveled down to Washington with fifty-one parishioners for the annual March for Life on the 36th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, Roe v. Wade.

It was a wonderful trip, and the march was the largest seen in years. It was also a decidedly young march, with vast numbers of high-school and college-aged young people participating.

Of course, hundreds of thousands of peaceful pro-life protesters marching in the nation’s capital did not make it on any of the news channels, nor was it reported in the print media.

Meanwhile, Caroline Kennedy, a pro-abortion Catholic, dropped out of her quest for the open New York Senate seat last week. Instead, Gov. Paterson, a pro-abortion Catholic, chose Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, a pro-abortion Catholic, to fill the vacancy. This so angered Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a pro-abortion Catholic, that she has announced she will challenge Sen. Gillibrand in the primary in two years. State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a pro-abortion Catholic, is now set to challenge a weakened Gov. Paterson, a pro abortion Catholic, in the primary for governor in two years as well. There was talk of Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, a pro-abortion Catholic, for the senate seat, and perhaps making a future run for governor.

Whoever gets the Democratic nomination for governor may well face Rudolf Giuliani, a pro-abortion Catholic, in the state-wide race.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a pro-abortion Catholic, said on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, that some $200 million dollars in taxpayer money, a part of the economic stimulus package, was earmarked for subsidizing artificial contraception. Previously describing herself as
an “ardent Catholic,” Pelosi said that increased spending on contraception “will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government” -- thereby implying that children are a burden to taxpayers. When Stephanopoulos asked the Speaker whether she was comfortable with that argument, she replied: “No apologies.” Thankfully, President Obama later dropped this from the stimulus package.

President Obama has made some interesting political appointments: Joseph Biden, a pro-abortion Catholic, to be Vice-President; Leon Panetta, a pro-abortion Catholic, to run the C.I.A.; Tom Daschle, a pro-abortion Catholic, to run the Department of Health & Human Services; Janet Napolitano, a pro abortion Catholic, to run the Department of Homeland Security; Ken Salazar, a pro-abortion Catholic, to run the Department of the Interior; Tom Vilsack, a pro-abortion Catholic, to run the Department of Agriculture; Hilda Solis, a pro-abortion Catholic, to run the Department of Labor; Tim Kane, a pro-abortion Catholic, to head the Democratic National Committee; and Ray LaHood, a pro-life Maronite Catholic (how did that happen?) to run the Department of Transportation.

In other news, the U.S. Bishops have begun a postcard campaign to stop the passage of the Freedom of Choice Act, which would undo every restriction placed on abortion during the last 36 years, including removing consciences clauses which would compel Catholic hospitals and doctors to perform abortions.

Socratic questioning applies in abortion debate

Socrates (born in 470 B.C.) was called the savior of Western civilization.

He realized that knowledge and virtue are inseparable; so much so that virtue could be defined as right knowledge. Right thinking and right doing can be distinguished from each other, but they can never be separated.

Therefore, Socrates realized that the death of truth would mean the death of virtue and that the death of virtue would spell the death of civilization. Without truth and virtue the only possible outcome is barbarianism.

Socrates used an analytical method by which he sought the logic of facts. For him the logic is what is left after the facts are exhausted.

"Beauty remains," he said, "after the rose fades."

Using the Socratic method of discerning truth is to ask provocative questions.

Let's allow the reverse order of this proven method from the "gadfly of Athens" to probe deeper into the moral logic that opposes abortion:

Claim: Don't interfere with abortion unless you're willing to adopt the unwanted infants.

Q: Is that like saying, "Don't interfere with wife-beating unless you are willing to marry the victimized woman?"

Claim: Every child has the right to be a wanted child.

Q: Is a person's value determined by another person's desire or evaluation? What if aged parents or discarded lovers are "unwanted"?

Claim: Every woman should be allowed freedom of choice.

Q: Is that like saying, "I wouldn't abuse a child or commit rape, but I will grant freedom of choice to others in these matters?

Claim: Every woman has the right to control her own body.

Q: Shouldn't it have been exercised earlier? Proof of no control?

Q: Since when does anyone have absolute right of control over his/her body? Police will limit if drunk, naked, contagious, etc.

Q: When another body is involved, aren't rights restricted? (as with rape, murder, etc.)

Claim: Termination of pregnancy, fetus, embryo, product of conception, etc.

Q: Don't labels often deceive? Why not "poisoned," "mutilated," "shredded," "killed"? (The newest proposal is to inject preborn babies with a lethal dose of potassium chloride, used to execute death row inmates, into the baby's heart so as to steer clear of the federal partial-birth abortion ban.)

Claim: Some communities reportedly have extended a warm welcome to the idea of housing abortion clinics.

Q: Where are the voices of those who so adamantly denounced ills committed against puppies and kittens, dogs and cats? We're talking human life now.

Claim: There are increasing numbers of clergy, politicians and citizens who state that abortion, gay marriage, and other cited moral ills are a matter of religious freedom.

Q: Could the words of the Roman philosopher and statesman, Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4? B.C. - 65 A.D.) be prophetic of this age in history, when he said that, when vice (an evil or wicked action) becomes a society's custom or accepted convention, it is almost impossible to remove?

Claim: This is a free country where people have the right to reject religious constraints and practice a new morality (such as sex while not married and the right to eradicate any unwanted consequences/pregnancy).

Q: Is there any truth to Ronald Reagan's quote, "If we ever forget that we are 'One Nation Under God,' then we will be one nation gone under?"

Judie Brown, president of American Life League, issued a statement today in response to an interview in which Archbishop Raymond Burke, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's highest court, stated,"There's not a question that a Catholic who publicly, and after admonition, supports pro-abortion legislation is not to receive Holy Communion and is not to be given Holy Communion … This is a law of the universal Church and it should be applied."

About the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Burke commented,"I think this argument [that this matter should be decided by theUSCCB] too is being used by people who don't want to confront theissue, this whole "wait 'til the Conference decides"...well the Conference has been discussing this since at least 2004. And nothing happens…
Individual bishops and priests simply have to do their duty.They have to confront politicians, Catholic politicians, who are sinning gravely and publicly in this regard. And that's their duty.
"Statement by Judie Brown:"It has long been American Life League's contention that canon law applies within the Church in the same way that state, federal or local law applies to the citizens of the United States. At American Life League, our focus has been on Canon 915, which is written for the express purpose of protecting the body and blood of Christ from sacrilege.We have repeatedly called on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to enforce this law, abide by this law and deny the Holy Eucharist to any public figure who claims to be Catholic while at the same time supporting abortion. Abortion is an intrinsically evil act,and no Catholic who supports that act in any way should be permitted to receive Christ.

We are deeply grateful for the definitive words of Archbishop Raymond Burke. Archbishop Burke was also asked about Catholic bishops who claim that denying Holy Communion to a pro-abortion politician "makes the Communion rail a [political] battleground." We extend our sincere gratitude to Archbishop Burke for once again making it clear why every single Catholic bishop and priest not only should enforce Canon 915, but is obliged to do so for the sake of souls and for the sake of protecting Christ in the Holy Eucharist from sacrilege."

Fr Angelo at Mary Victrix makes some vital points about pro-abortion politicians, and those who support them.
"In our Supreme Court and in our Congress, we have a plethora of so-called Catholics who are failing to live their Catholic identity. Over 50 percent of our electorate voted for a president who is one of the most pro-culture-of-death candidates from a major party to run for the highest office of the land."
